When Oxlade first stepped into mainstream consciousness with hits like 2018’s “Mamiwota” alongside controversial rapper Blaqbonez, and 2020’s alluring single, “Away”, one thing was clear: the gifted singer-songwriter from the town of Surulere in Lagos, Nigeria, was setting out on an intentional path towards global stardom.
Fast forward a few years—cue: a performance with fellow Surulere native Wizkid at London’s O2 Arena, a massive global hit with “Ku Lo Sa”, a Billboard Music Award nomination, and more—and he comfortably attains that position.
On his highly-anticipated debut album, Oxlade from Africa, Oxlade grapples with the realities of his new, vastly successful life while ensuring that his heritage is unmistakably understood as unapologetically African. The project’s intro makes sure to highlight this through the words of Uganda’s political and musical personality, Bobi Wine.
Oxlade assumes a confident stance backed by assists from some of the formidable voices across the continent and diaspora, such as Dave, Fally Ipupa, Flavour, Ojahbee, Popcaan, Sarkodie, Tomi Owó and Wande Coal. Throughout the 16-track project, he floats between diverse genres like Afrobeats, Amapiano, Afroswing, R&B and coupé décalé as he chronicles tales of love, pain, hustle, and joy.
Much like his storytelling, Oxlade’s distinct vocals are smooth yet sharp and punchy as ever. With Oxlade From Africa, he reflects his desire to represent not just Surulere, Lagos, or Nigeria, but the entire continent.
