Fast-rising Nigerian singer, Winny, has released “Commercial Break,” her latest offering following her 2023 eponymous project. It’s safe to say that in about a year since her debut, her artistry has taken a more confident, audacious, and riveting turn.
When Winny first began to garner attention, it was clear that her sound, a distinctive blend of reggae, R&B, and Afro-pop, was a recipe for a delectable career ahead. With “Commercial Break,” the Apple Music Up Next alumna leans further into the facets of her artistry that make her a standout force in the Nigerian music landscape.
A statement describes the tracks on Commercial Break as “beautiful distractions offering solace, joy, and even escape amidst life’s chaos.” The project opens with “Picture Perfect,” a soulful number punctuated by Winny’s sharp vocals backed by a soulful choir. Things kick into a higher tempo on the Tochi Bedford-produced “All Night.” Alongside Jamaican singer and producer Projexx, Winny offers a sultry, whine-commanding anthem with “Suh Good.”
“Commercial Break is used as a metaphor,” Winny explains in a statement. “Each song represents fleeting moments of love, like commercial breaks in life where love interrupts the everyday routine. Love can come from unexpected connections and can be presented as spontaneous, catching people off guard in the middle of life’s ‘programming,’ much like a commercial break offering relief, a temporary escape from pain, similar to a break during a tense show. Each track symbolises different stages or perspectives of love, just like switching between channels from passion to distance, excitement to calmness, capturing the idea that some loves are temporary, brief in the commercial breaks of life, leaving a lasting impact even if they are short-lived.”
