South African producer and DJ DESIREE is redefining her place in electronic music with the release of her latest EP, Intersexy. The two-track project is more than just a collection of sounds; it’s a declaration of artistic growth, identity, and resilience. Known for blending the rhythmic richness of South African house with eclectic global influences, DESIREE’s new work marks a bold step forward in her evolution.
Inspired by avant-garde electronic composers who influenced her during her teenage years, Intersexy channels DESIREE’s deep passion for electronica’s many forms. Her sound, a melting pot of deep house, techno, and soulful textures—has earned her spots on some of the world’s most revered stages, including fabric, Glastonbury, Cercle, DGTL, and Lost Village. Beyond performing, she curates her own MMINO party, a burgeoning brand and community built around her distinct ethos.
The EP opens with “Khuluma Nami,” meaning “speak with me” in Zulu. The track is a contemplative yet lively offering, weaving an emotive bassline with the tender, heartfelt vocals of Jabulile Majola. It’s an anthem of self-discovery, urging listeners to embrace their individuality and dreams, a theme that resonates deeply with DESIREE’s personal and professional journey.
The title track, “Intersexy,” is an audacious statement. Built around cinematic strings and orchestral influences, the song is an exploration of sound and identity. “It sounds like a house music track created with an orchestra,” DESIREE explains, noting its divergence from her earlier works. The track isn’t just a musical milestone—it’s a reflection of her journey as a black, intersex woman navigating the often uncharted territories of the global music scene.
“This EP is very different from my previous releases,” DESIREE shares. “It reflects who I am, my identity, and my values. Being a black intersex woman from South Africa performing in spaces where people like me are rare comes with responsibility. I know I’m representing diverse communities, and that keeps me grounded.”
DESIREE’s discography is already an impressive testament to her versatility and creativity. Her debut EP, Femme Tech, released in 2022, was met with critical acclaim. Her remixes, including a standout rework of Selaelo Selota’s jazz classic “Thrrr… Phaaa!” and reinterpretations of tracks by Keinemusik and LP Giobbi, have showcased her ability to seamlessly blend cultural and electronic elements.
Coinciding with Intersexy, DESIREE is embarking on an Africa tour while launching her own label, MMINO—Sepedi for “music.” The imprint aims to celebrate the diversity of Afro House and beyond, while solidifying her role as an A&R powerhouse with a keen ear for transformative sounds.
Already recognized as a rising star, including a cover feature on DJ Mag North America, DESIREE continues to break boundaries. With Intersexy, DESIREE invites listeners to experience the profound emotional arcs of her sound, solidifying her place as a global ambassador for innovation in electronic music.
