Fresh off their historic win at the 2023 Mercury Music Prize, UK-based jazz outfit Ezra Collective have dropped off a new single, “Streets Is Calling”, which is as much of an invitation as it is a declaration.
Teaming up with Ghanaian lyrical titan M.anifest and the South African powerhouse Moonchild Sanelly, Ezra Collective fuse Highlife, Amapiano and Afrobeats into a track that echoes the restless energy of the urban night. “Streets Is Calling” is a song for those moments when the night beckons, and the only place that makes sense is a crowded dancefloor. Femi Koleoso, Ezra’s drummer and heartbeat, puts it best: “‘Streets Is Calling’ is about that vibe when you get the call, and you know it’s time to move. The streets have spoken, and they’re pulling you in.”
It’s a sentiment that runs through Ezra Collective’s forthcoming album, Dance, No One’s Watching, which is set to drop on September 27.
Crafted as the band toured the globe in 2023, Dance, No One’s Watching is a sonic diary of the dancefloors they’ve encountered—a love letter to the places where music and movement intertwine. Ezra Collective have sold out venues across the UK, EU, and US, smashed sets at Glastonbury, and even celebrated Quincy Jones’ birthday in style. This November, they’ll be making history yet again as the first UK jazz act to headline at London’s OVO Arena Wembley.
Ezra Collective’s latest offering is just the next chapter in what’s been a banner year for the London-based quintet. Winning the Mercury Prize for Where I’m Meant To Be was just the beginning.
With Dance, No One’s Watching, they’re set to further push the boundaries of what jazz can be, making sure that wherever they go, the streets are always calling.
