Exclusive: FIDO Aims to Shake Things Up with New Single, ‘Money Moves’

Afropop’s shiniest new star is in a thankful mood.

I believe that God is able. I just believe that God is the only way because if God says yes, nobody can say no, fast-rising singer FIDO says of what has led him to become one of the newest buzzy-worthy names in Nigerian music. From the outside looking in, this appears to be a highly potent formula aided by the school of viral TikTok success for which FIDO is an ace student. After all, it is not everyday a new artist delivers chart-topping debut and sophomore singles in quick succession. But the carefree “Awolowo” and the hopeful “Joy Is Coming” hit the mark. With his latest track “Money Moves”, he aims to continue his winning streak.

I would say the inspiration behind ‘Money Moves’ is just me finding myself in a space whereby I’m giving thanks to God for what he has done in my life, the blessings that he has granted me to receive, and the grace that I used when I came into the industry, he says. Produced by Tudor Monroe, “Money Moves” takes a detour from the glossy instrumentation of his previous releases as it opts for a more rough-around-the-edges feel and characterised by thumping log drums. FIDO, however, maintains much of his aptitude for repetitive and catchy lyricism switching between English and Yoruba.

I’m a versatile artist and I’m not just locked in one particular type of sound, he explains. I’m the type of artist that tends to exploit other genres of music. I might just come today and say ‘okay this week I want to give them a godly sound’. Tomorrow I’ll say ‘I want to give them a naughty sound’.”

For an emerging artist still in the early stages of establishing his presence in the industry, his story is still being written yet, his unparalleled self-belief and willingness to take the plunge into uncharted waters as an independent artist continuously sets him apart. Though it often comes with blow back from fans and critics, regardless, he remains steadfast in his choices as he boldly declares on the track, I stand gidigba no shaking”.

Regarding his anticipated debut project, he says, “I can’t give a certain date” but it’s on the horizon and he’s hopeful for what’s to come in the future. “The journey’s in God’s hands so I don’t know how it’s all going to end. But it’s God who keeps me going.”
