Jamilah Barry Adds A Touch Of Drill To New Single “F**k It (On-1)”

Ms. Barry has a hit on her hands.

The R&Drill fusion has been something artists have been toying with for a little while now.

Shaé Universe found success with it early on, but one artist who hasn’t been given quite as much credit as she deserves when it comes to this hybrid sound is Jamilah Barry, the British-Guinean talent whose 2020 release, “Merlot”, was a shining example of the less-is-more approach.

On her new single, “Fuck It (On-1)”, we see Jamilah Barry return to that territory with a haunting vocal performance over a sombre piano riff that she combines with chilling hi-hat triplets and sliding drill bass lines. In fact, she herself has gone on record as saying she considers this new single to be a sequel to “Merlot”.

“This song really is like a ‘Merlot 2’ for me,” she shared in a statement. “I love trying new things and writing over a drill beat was something I’d wanted to do for a while. I don’t usually swear so much when writing but, this time, I genuinely thought fuck it! It was a lot of fun.”

Although her vocals are haunting, the title and the subject matter are more inline with the chest-puffing bravado of drill, adding extra depth to the way she blends the two genres.
