Since their 2019 self-titled EP, KOKOROKO have continued to captivate listeners around the world with their smooth groove-rooted Afro-jazz sound.
With their new single, “Three Piece Suit” featuring Azekel, the London-based collective explore fresh layers to their already profound style: woozy synths merged with the wispy Brazilian nose flute, mystical echoes and a funky bassline, “Three Piece Suit” feels like home. It taps into the themes of lineage and ancestry, and seeks to honour the Nigerian immigrant journey.
“We wrote the song thinking of our grandfathers arriving in London and the way they carried themselves and dressed in the 1960s,” says Onome Edgeworth, the band’s percussionist. “They were part of a dapper and suited generation that sowed the seeds for the worlds we’re building now. It speaks to our sentimental memories of a time that we know we can’t have back.” Azekel added that “the song is about coming back, letting go, and realising that all things, past, present, and future, are intertwined.”
The release comes with the announcement of KOKOROKO’s upcoming EP, Get The Message, slated for release on November 1. The project follows the remix album of their 2022 debut, Could We Be More, which received wide critical acclaim at the time.
KOKOROKO will also be embarking on a tour across the UK, with their final date being at the prestigious O2 Academy Brixton, in South London, on November 27.
