Cinema lovers, brace yourselves: Netflix has offered an exciting preview of what’s to come from South Africa and beyond as we head into the festive season, and 2024’s final act.
In an exclusive reveal at MIP Africa, Ben Amadasun, Netflix’s VP of Content for the Middle East and Africa, showcased a diverse slate of upcoming programming. South African stories are taking centre stage once again, alongside a line-up of global heavyweights sure to keep subscribers glued to their screens.
Speaking on the platform’s continued investment in local content, Amadasun said: “We are incredibly excited to continue strengthening our relationships with production partners in South Africa and bringing diverse and authentic local stories by local storytellers to our local and global audiences. We have seen South African stories not only be loved locally, but they have also found a fandom in many countries around the world.”

Feature Films To Watch:
Happiness Is (Oct 18, 2024): Continuing the romantic comedy franchise that began with Happiness is a Four Letter Word, this new film tackles friendship, personal growth, and the pursuit of happiness. Produced by Blingola Media, the women-led production promises to be a heartwarming installment filled with emotional twists and turns.
Umjolo: The Gone Girl (Nov 8, 2024): The first in a four-part anthology from Stained Glass TV, Umjolo kicks off with a suspenseful tale of love, trust, and betrayal. Directed by Fikile Mogodi, this South African drama will leave audiences reeling when a seemingly perfect relationship unravels.
Disaster Holiday (Dec 13, 2024): From Burnt Onion Productions, known for the How to Ruin Christmas franchise, comes a holiday comedy about a workaholic’s hilarious attempt to salvage his family’s happiness on an impromptu holiday. Directed by Rethabile Ramaphakela, expect laughs, mishaps, and festive chaos.

Blood Legacy (Sept 20, 2024): From the creators of Blood & Water comes a gripping drama that explores the fallout of a family patriarch’s murder. Set in the world of corporate power struggles and dark secrets, this series is stacked with talent, featuring the late Connie Chiume, Sello Maake ka-Ncube and Pallance Dladla. Family, betrayal and legacy intertwine in this must-watch thriller.
Love Never Lies: South Africa (Nov 29, 2024): Adapted from the international hit reality show, this South African edition pits six couples against a lie detector test, where deception costs money and truth comes with a prize. Who will walk away with love intact?
