Since its release in April 2024, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by the Nigerian-American singer and songwriter Shaboozey has continuously wormed its way into the ears and hearts of many while taking over airwaves around the world.
Now, the catchy track sits as the longest-running number one song in the United States this year, and extends its reign by yet another week making a total of 10 weeks. The country single, which interpolates J-Kwon’s “Tipsy”, is the first to mark this milestone since Morgan Wallen’s country-pop crossover single, “Last Night”, led for 16 weeks in March to August 2023. It is also the first song by a Black male artist to simultaneously top Billboard’s Hot Country Songs Chart (where it leads for a 14th week) and Hot 100 Chart after its debut.
Additionally, the song was nominated for Single of the Year at the 58th annual CMA Awards, with Shaboozey himself receiving a nomination for Best New Artist. The year has been nothing short of pivotal for the country artist, whose path towards wide commercial success was set off with a two-feature co-sign on Beyonce’s revered country album, Cowboy Carter.
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar back in May, right before he released his debut album, Where I’ve Been Isn’t Where I’m Going, he spoke on his then-looming success, stating: “I’ve been going to all of these places I’ve never been before, and every day that I wake up, it’s something new. It feels like I’m finally here.
“There were a lot of challenges, places that I could’ve stopped or given up, but it was all part of the journey. And now I’m just looking forward.”
