It’s valentine’s season and while love might be in the air, Spotify has revealed that so is pain. The streaming platform saw a significant 194% increase in streams of heartbreak songs in the Sub-Saharan region over the period illustrating the healing power of music.
Though the universal experience of heartbreak isn’t gender specific, men in the region lead the pack accounting for 52% of listeners while women follow with 46%. “Listeners most often tune into heartbreak songs between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM, typically during their commute home or as they unwind for the evening,” Spotify highlights in a statement. “The patterns suggest that heartbreak music serves as both a coping mechanism and a form of self-expression for many. Some listeners use these songs as a means of healing, while others find solace in lyrics that articulate emotions they struggle to express.”
Nigeria leads the charge with a staggering 626% surge in heartbreak song streams, followed by Ghana at 226% and Uganda at 206%. Kenya also experienced a substantial increase of 189%, while Tanzania and South Africa saw rises of 132% and 116% respectively. “This data underscores the growing trend of listeners connecting with emotionally resonant music during this time of year,” Spotify says.
