At just 23, Nigerian audio engineer Tejumoluwa (Teju) Olarewaju is helping position Nigeria not only as a global music powerhouse, but also as a builder of the technology behind the sound.
The Los Angeles–based mixing and mastering engineer has developed The Brown Noise Generator, widely regarded as Nigeria’s first professional audio plugin. The tool is designed for producers, audio engineers, and everyday users seeking high-quality low-frequency reference noise for both studio and wellness applications.
A graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design, where he served as Salutatorian for the Class of 2024, Olarewaju has quickly built an impressive technical profile. He is Dolby Atmos Certified, Pro Tools Post Certified, and a recipient of the Audio Engineering Society Educational Foundation award, with additional recognition including a Cinema Audio Society nomination.
As Afrobeats and Afroswing continue their global rise, much of the professional audio software used across the continent still originates from Western developers. Olarewaju saw this gap as an opportunity to establish Nigerian presence in pro audio technology.
Built using the HISE framework and custom C++ processing, The Brown Noise Generator was engineered to meet international studio standards while supporting the bass-forward sound that defines many African genres.
Beyond music production, the plugin also offers wellness benefits such as improved sleep quality, enhanced focus, and reduced urban noise distraction, making it relevant for both professionals and everyday users.
As African artists continue to dominate global charts, innovators like Teju Olarewaju are helping ensure the continent also builds the tools powering modern music production.
