South African musician and producer Mpho Mohlong, better known as Mpho.Wav, is making waves with his debut album, Book of Wav. Known for his innovative sound and smooth fusion of Afro-house and 3-step, Mpho.Wav has crafted an album that takes listeners on an atmospheric journey. Raised in Orange Farm and the Vaal Triangle, Mpho.Wav has been passionate about music since he was 14, and it shows. His attention to lush, celestial production and layered soundscapes is already turning heads.
With its rhythmic, danceable beats and deep, collaborative spirit, Book of Wav is set to be a staple on dance floors this summer. This project marks a new chapter in Mpho.Wav’s career, celebrating just how far he’s come. Starting out as a drummer and pianist in church, he soon became a sought-after session musician, working with top Smooth Jazz Fusion and Gospel artists.
His journey into production began when a friend introduced him to digital tools, sparking a passion for exploring sound. His talent took off from there, and he joined El World Music (now Under the Sun), the label founded by his mentor and friend Sun-El Musician. There, Mpho.Wav contributed as both a session musician and producer, collaborating with some of the label’s most celebrated artists.
Book of Wav is a genre-blending masterpiece where jazz, gospel, and Afro-house collide. Inspired by icons like Sun-El Musician, Da Capo, and Black Coffee, Mpho.Wav’s sound is as grounding as it is otherworldly, drawing praise from heavyweights like Shimza, and Zakes Bantwini. Each track is like a chapter, telling Mpho.Wav’s story through collaborations with industry giants like Simmy, Da Capo, Mthunzi, and Azana. These partnerships bring a range of sounds, but all harmonize beautifully in Mpho.Wav’s universe, where community and connection are at the core. This album is more than just music; it’s a celebration of the artists and voices he’s brought together.
