France-born Senegalese forward Ibrahim Mbaye made history on Tuesday, June 16, becoming the youngest African player to score at the FIFA World Cup. He achieved this feat at just 18 years and 143 days old during Senegal’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against France.

The goal arrived on a difficult night for Senegal, who suffered a 3-1 defeat to France. The Lions of Teranga fought courageously in the first half, but the Blues scored three goals against them in the second half, two of which were by Kylian Mbappé, whose roots could be traced to Cameroon. It was an historic night for Africa and Ibrahim Mbaye himself, as it was his World Cup debut.
As the clock ticked into stoppage time, Mbaye was brought in, and in just a few minutes later, he scored what became his country’s first goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His goal may not have changed the outcome of the match, but it rewrote the record books and made him part of football history, surpassing the previous record held by Senegal’s Moussa Wagué to become the youngest African player ever to score at the FIFA World Cup.

The milestone also makes the teenager the youngest Senegalese player to score in FIFA World Cup history, adding another remarkable achievement to an already extraordinary young career.
Mbaye was born on January 24, 2008, in Trappes, France, to a Senegalese father and a Moroccan mother. Representing French champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at club level, the forward has established himself as one of the brightest young talents in world football.

He became the youngest player ever to start a match for PSG and before his World Cup breakthrough, he had already made history at the Africa Cup of Nations as the youngest player to score at the tournament in the 21st century when he scored against Sudan at just 17 years and 344 days old.

That goal also shattered a long-standing Senegalese record previously held by Mamadou Diallo, making Mbaye the youngest Senegalese goalscorer in AFCON history.
Now, with a World Cup record added to his achievement, the teenager’s reputation continues to soar.
