Brazil’s anaiis & Grupo Cosmo Channel Diverse Cultural Fusions On ‘anaiis & Grupo Cosmo’ EP

The eponymous project is accompanied by captivating visuals for standout track “B.P.E”.

French-Senegalese singer-songwriter anaiis has shared her joint project with Brazilian music group, Grupo Cosmo: the anaiis & Grupo Cosmo EP, a 7-track offering that draws from a blend of Brazilian musical traditions, like bossa nova, as well as rock and ’70s psychedelia. The project also features collaborations with fellow Brazilian acts Luedji Luna and Sessa.

For anaiis, anaiis & Grupo Cosmo is a personal reflection on the complexities of motherhood, birth, and Black identity. “This album is a sonic emergence of the person I was becoming at this moment in my life,” she explains. The foundations for the set began to form back in 2020 during an artist residency in Salvador, Brazil, where anaiis and Luedji Luna first connected. There, they created the opener, “Toda Cor”, a track dedicated to their shared bond as Black women despite their cultural origins.

To accompany the release of the EP, anaiis has also released the video for “B.P.E.”, co-directed with Ronan McKenzie and Tayo Rapport. “I wanted the film to explore the ways in which tradition and culture are passed down in this very universal and iconic way but also to invigorate the viewer with joy,” she says. “The song is a celebration of Blackness, and it was important for me that the film captured the power of our spirit as a collective.”
