Bnnyhunna, the Dutch-Ghanaian experimental jazz whizz, has released his debut album, Echoes Of Prayer. This marks a significant milestone for the musician who, in the last few years, has racked up a bevy of achievements, from scoring Paris Fashion Week performances and backing Asake with his bass skills on Lungu Boy, to composing an original score for the Dutch National Opera.
Echoes Of Prayer leans into Bnnyhunna’s West African heritage sonically, and draws from the conventional experience of growing up in the church. On the project, elements of ‘70s-era funk and Highlife grooves exist harmoniously in the same sphere as contemporary hip-hop rhythms, jazz undertones, and gospel choirs—all of which showcase his versatility.
Right off the bat, “Prayer” (featuring Tallulah Rose and QUANZA) opens the album with organ notes that immediately transport you into the sanctuary of a church. More highlights come in the form of “Communicate”, with The Cavemen and Jembaa Groove offering a spirited touch with Highlife and Afrobeats flavours; “Should’ve Been You” blends smooth jazz and R&B to evoke romantic longing, while the guitar riffs on “Avanti” offer moments of contemplation and reflection.
For Bnnyhunna, Echoes Of Prayer isn’t just a culmination of his artistic growth since his debut project, SINTHA EP. It’s an immersive piece of spiritual exploration, challenging listeners to look within for strength and hope.
Bnnyhunna will be supporting KOKOROKO across their European tour dates in November. For now, though, stream Echoes Of Prayer in full below.
