Zimbabwean singer-songwriter Gemma Griffiths has just released her long-awaited new single, “Ndimi Mwari”. The song, which Gemma describes as a “heartfelt prayer”, is a reflection on God’s presence in both the good and difficult moments of life. “’Ndimi Mwari’ is a reminder that God is always with us,” she explains.
The track, co-written with Zimbabwean artist Baba Harare and produced by Nyasha Timbe (who’s worked with stars like VoltzJT and Enzo Ishall), blends Afro-gospel’s spiritual depth with Gemma’s mix of Shona and English lyrics. Its emotional appeal transcends language, making it accessible to a global audience.
The release is paired with a visually striking music video, directed by Cozy Scott. Filmed in Zimbabwe’s scenic Vumba mountains, the visuals highlight the beauty of locations like Vumba, Nyanga and Harare, adding to the song’s uplifting message.
2024 has been a huge year for Gemma: she worked with Chillspot’s DJ Levels and Fantan on the hit “Ndino Pembera”, collaborated with Leo Magozz on “My Baby”, and dropped “Where I’m Going”, which features a sample of the late Bob Nyabinde’s classic “Chabuda Hapana”. She also appeared on the remix of “Gore Rino” by Tembalami alongside Nutty O, and teamed up with South African star Prince Kaybee for “Sorry Not Sorry”, which premiered on MTV.
Gemma’s success builds on the momentum of her 2023 Afro-gospel hit, “Ndichatarisa”, which became a viral sensation on TikTok with over 70 million streams and more than 115,000 fan-made videos. By the end of last year, she was the most-streamed female artist from Zimbabwe on the platform.
With a social media following of over 1.2 million and YouTube subscribers surpassing 100K, Gemma Griffiths continues to expand her reach. “Ndimi Mwari” marks an exciting new chapter in her musical journey, as she continues to push boundaries and grow her global fanbase.
