Julian King has quickly become a force in Zimbabwe’s music scene, and he’s just getting started. Known for his breakout hit, “One By One” with Saint Floew—which ruled local charts last year—the multi-talented singer, songwriter, dancer and actor is back with a debut album that digs deep. Titled Misunderstood, the album gives listeners an unfiltered look into Julian’s world, blending introspective lyrics with irresistible beats that’ll keep any crowd moving.
Misunderstood features collabs with acclaimed artists such as Holy Ten, Geosteady and Nutty O. Behind the scenes, Julian worked with an impressive roster of producers, including Fidelis Banda (known as Whiteboy), Farai Matema (Phatso), Wayne Maromo (WayneBeats), Haniel Muzerengwa (Papa Haniel), Sobusa Khumalo (JSob) and Silvrbeats (Tinotenda Makaya), crafting a sound that truly reflects Zimbabwe’s thriving Afro-fusion scene.
The artist born Julian Lennon Kanombirira has become a prominent voice in Afro-fusion, blending dancehall, Afrobeats and R&B to create a sound that’s all his own. Misunderstood is both a continuation of his chart-topping success and a bold statement of his artistry. With lyrics that touch on social issues and self-reflection, the album is a powerful reminder of Julian’s versatility and his mission to stand out.
“This album is more than just music—it’s my story, my art and my heart,” Julian shared with Rolling Stone Africa. “It’s for anyone who has ever felt overlooked but refused to stop. I poured my soul and artistry into every note, and now, I’m ready to share it with you.”
The 10-tracker has already resonated with fans, with repeat-worthy songs like “Eke”—a collaboration with Nutty O—that explores perseverance in the face of obstacles. The track also features striking visuals directed by Omar Castillo. Then there’s “Marry Me”, a love song set to a lush Afrobeats backdrop produced by Fidelis Banda, making it one of the album’s standout moments.
